It’s amazing how much stuff people absent mindlessly throw out each day. Paper towels, napkins, plastic utensils are a few that come to mind. I remember when I was growing up how I would take an empty glass bottle back to the store. For my efforts, I would receive a nickel. Now, many of the garbage cans (or worse yet – sidewalks) in front of stores are full of plastic bottles from the makers of every kind of soft drink imaginable.

Anyway, a good place to start making a dent on this problem is your lunchbox. Instead of brown bagging it or using styrofoam containers, why not use a practical 2-Tier Stainless Steel Lunch Container and turn your take out dinner or lunch into a waste-free meal?

I just read an interesting article in the health section of The Times of India about potential health risks of heating foods in polycarbonate plastic food containers. It seems as though they want to alert their readers to the potential risks of bisphenol A, BPA, which can leach out of the plastic at high temperatures. BPA has been linked to fertility problems, breast cancer and prostate cancer. I didn’t realize that plastic containers were widely used in India. I thought that this was more of a first world phenomena. Anyway, don’t heat anything in polycarbonate plastic food containers, especially ones that have the number 7 marked on the bottom.

Interestingly enough, this subject is showing up in the “mainstream” press. According to an article in “U.S. News & World Report“, BPA might be a cause for erectile dysfunction in men. For those of you that don’t know, BPA is an essential ingredient of polycarbonates, epoxy resins and many types of plastics.

I can hear it now: “Sorry about that honey, I guess that microwaving my lunch in tupperware everyday at the office has really lowered my testosterone levels because of the BPA leaching into my food. I’d better start taking my lunch in glass or stainless steel containers. Then, things will be back to normal, kitten. I’ll be that tiger that you always knew!”

By all means limit your intake of BPA. However, I think that other factors might be involved like: cholesterol, blood pressure, stress, drug side effects, etc.

Have you ever seen a product that made you say “Why didn’t I think of that?”

It’s called Blood Energy Drink. It even comes in its very own IV bag! As you can see in the photo, the blood type is B positive. I wonder if O negative taste any different?

Anyway, does anybody see a potential problem here?

Yes, Bisphenol A. Not only does one find it in plastic food storage containers, water bottles, etc., but, also in medical equipment-IV bags in particular. This is according to a study by the National Academy of Science, as discussed in Dr. Joseph McNamara’s Blog.
It’s an interesting read.

Most of my dishes center around a grain (basmati rice, quinoa or couscous), that I buy in bulk. Then, I make a recipe around it. Buying in bulk is nothing new to me. Besides, there is much less packaging to throw away. According to ShifYourHabit.com, If everyone in the U.S. bought in bulk, there would be 1.1 million fewer garbage trailer trips to landfills each year. Wow, think about that!

Once you made your mouth-watering dish that your family (even the kids!) enjoyed, do not heap the left overs into the usual pale-green plastic boxes, but into this stylish glass container. After labeling it, you can stow it away in the fridge or freezer.

I knew it. I always wondered why my wife’s guacamole dip tasted so much better than what I found being served at most casual-attire parties that I used to frequent. (I’m surprised that I haven’t been invited to any recently). At first I attributed it to my wife’s superior insight on the subject- she’s Mexican. But, after reading “The Top 10 Things Food Companies Don’t Want You to Know”, I now know why. Many of those guacamole dips you buy at the supermarket don’t even contain avocados! So what is that green stuff? It’s hydrogenated oils, artificial colors and monosodium glutamate. Yum!

If you want my wife’s recipe, please email me at info@healthykitchenware.com. Also, be sure to refrigerate any left-over dip in a glass container.

It appears that the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) is going after a company called Eco Canteen because of their marketing campaign, which points out the benefits of stainless steel containers over plastic ones. Nothing new here. So, why does the IBWA care so much about a few commercials. Why are they are willing to spend large sums of money dragging Eco Canteen through the courts? Money? Warning other companies not to do the same thing? I don’t claim to know.

But a change is blowing in the wind.

Even though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gives their approval and a safety clearance to every plastic food product container in the US, the public is catching on. This cozy relationship between the plastics industry and the regulatory agencies of the U.S. Government is coming under close scrutiny, as never before. I doubt that it will be business as usual pretty soon
