According to a recent government study, ingested bisphenol A (BPA) is quickly elinminated in the urine. BPA was almost undetectable in the bloodstream, even when urine levels were high in the adult participants.

The lead researcher, Justin G. Teeguarden, PhD, of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash, commented that the odds of BPA posing a significant health risk were “small”.

What about the possible harmful effects in young kids and fetuses?

I’m sure that by now most people are aware that BPA (bisphenol A) has been linked to reproductive disorders and some cancers.

So, a lot of people have switched to non-plastic water bottles in an effort to lessen their intake of this chemical.

Did you know, according to a recent study,
that a number of aluminum water bottles with epoxy liners released up to 5 times the amount of BPA compared to some of their plastic counterparts?

So, stick to stainless steel and you can’t go wrong.

Everyday, at work during a break, I watch my fellow co-workers heat up their left-overs in a microwave oven using plastic storage containers . Much of the plastic is scratched and worn from continuous use. As the oven sends out its electromagnetic waves, chemical bonds break silently and invisibly into their food. It doesn’t bubble or melt. They don’t taste the plastic particles. But, they’re there.

BPA that is. Coca Cola announced that they will not phase out bisphenol A, a known hormone disruptor, in their packaging of canned soft drinks. Apparently, there’s not enough scientific evidence to support it. That’s OK. I quite drinking the stuff after we did an experiment in school, where a tooth was placed in a jar full of coke and we watched it slowly disapear.
BPA might be the least of your worries when drinking coke!

I didn’t know that he had one. Anyway, in their latest report, they urged the President “to use the power of your office to remove the carcinogens and other toxins from our food, water, and air that needlessly increase health care costs, cripple our nation’s productivity, and devastate American lives.” Wow! Our old friend bisphenol A (BPA) got a special mention because it “remains unregulated in the United States, despite the growing link between BPA and several diseases, including various cancers.” (Thanks, Indiancountrytoday.com).

I just read an interesting article in the health section of The Times of India about potential health risks of heating foods in polycarbonate plastic food containers. It seems as though they want to alert their readers to the potential risks of bisphenol A, BPA, which can leach out of the plastic at high temperatures. BPA has been linked to fertility problems, breast cancer and prostate cancer. I didn’t realize that plastic containers were widely used in India. I thought that this was more of a first world phenomena. Anyway, don’t heat anything in polycarbonate plastic food containers, especially ones that have the number 7 marked on the bottom.

Is BPA, also called Bisephenol, really dangerous? As you have read in other blogs on this site, studies have shown that BPA can lead to all sorts of health problems, including erectile dysfunction in men, heart aliments and disrupting endocrines in your body. However, for every study showing the harmful effects of the chemical, there is a conflicting study demonstrating the opposite. How is this possible? Because different laboratories use their own procedures and experiments in studing the chemical, which lead to different results in their findings. I don’t claim to be a scientist. But, until they get it all sorted out, it would be best to error on the side of caution. Don’t microwave anything in a plastic containers. Use stainless steel and glass containers around the kitchen.

According to the “Clean Air Council”, the average American throws out 4.39 lbs of trash a day! I know that I see much more than that just at the “End of the Year Soccer Parties” that I attend with my daugthers. A good way to start would be to bring along reusable containers, utensils and towels to work, restaurants and potlucks. You might get some strange looks, but who cares?

First, you can quit buying those bulky, over-packaged, prefab lunches with names like: Lunch Makers and Lunchables. Whenever I’m in the supermarket with my youngest, she’s always attracted to them. Must be the packaging that catches her eye!

A better alternative for you, the environment and your kids would be to use wrap-n-mats for sandwiches, snacks, etc. They’re reusable, economical and washable. Also, check out the new, cool designs that will entice your kids to use them everyday!

Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Chemical Company Limited (SSMC) (Shanghai, China), a joint venture established in 2006 by Mitsui Chemicals Inc. headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. headquartered in Beijing, China announced that it is building a plant for the production of acetone and phenol in Shanghai.
Now, why would these two companies spend millions of dollars to construct a chemical plant to produce Bisphenol A (BPA) when BPA is coming under increasing scrutiny in North America and Europe. The company already produces 120,000 metric tons (264,600,000 lbs) of the stuff a year. Something tells me to follow the money on this one! China just surpassed the US to become the world’s largest auto market. Will it become the world’s largest BPA market too!
