Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Chemical Company Limited (SSMC) (Shanghai, China), a joint venture established in 2006 by Mitsui Chemicals Inc. headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. headquartered in Beijing, China announced that it is building a plant for the production of acetone and phenol in Shanghai.
Now, why would these two companies spend millions of dollars to construct a chemical plant to produce Bisphenol A (BPA) when BPA is coming under increasing scrutiny in North America and Europe. The company already produces 120,000 metric tons (264,600,000 lbs) of the stuff a year. Something tells me to follow the money on this one! China just surpassed the US to become the world’s largest auto market. Will it become the world’s largest BPA market too!

According to the EPA, Bisphenol-A (bpa) -”a reproductive, developmental and systemic toxicant” has shown up in cash register receipts! (I always thought that they smelled funny). According to the Environmental Working Group, the amount of BPA on some Bank ATM, McDonalds and Wal-Mart receipts is 250 to 1000 times more than what’s found in a can of food or baby formula, etc. Better think twice next time they ask if you want a receipt or not!

The federal government (Canadian, of course) declared bisphenol A a toxin today. This official declaration falls under the Canadian Enviromental Protection Act. Most of the big retailers (Sears Canada, Rexall Pharmacies and Hudson’s Bay Company just to name a few) have fallen in line and started to pull plastic products containing BPA off the shelves. Imagine if they did that at Walmart here in the states. (Yes, I shop at Walmart ). Half of the store would be empty!
If you want to start pulling items off your shelves, and replacing them with quality, non BPA food containers, water bottles and baby bottles, then check out www.HealthyKitchenware.com.

The plastic vortex, also referred to as Great Eastern Pacific Garbage Patch, North Pacific Gyre, Eighth Continent or Great Garbage Patch is just a giant patch of garbage in the ocean whose size is unknown. Some estimate the extension of the floating debris to be the size of the state of Texas or more. This giant dump contains mostly plastics: bags, nets, shoes, flip flops, bottles, caps, etc.

The reason this floating garbage patch exists has to do with the fact that rivers lead to the ocean and that garbage dumped in waterways is taken out by currents. The clockwise current in the North Pacific traps the debris. More information from wikipedia about the plastic vortex.
Plastic, a petroleum derived product, is not degradable and only breaks down into smaller and smaller particles. These particles end up on beaches and in many fish and bird stomachs. The smaller particles resemble plankton, krill and fish eggs that are the main food source of marine animals.

This video on youtube talks about the plastic soup located between San Francisco and Hawaii.

Interestingly enough, this subject is showing up in the “mainstream” press. According to an article in “U.S. News & World Report“, BPA might be a cause for erectile dysfunction in men. For those of you that don’t know, BPA is an essential ingredient of polycarbonates, epoxy resins and many types of plastics.

I can hear it now: “Sorry about that honey, I guess that microwaving my lunch in tupperware everyday at the office has really lowered my testosterone levels because of the BPA leaching into my food. I’d better start taking my lunch in glass or stainless steel containers. Then, things will be back to normal, kitten. I’ll be that tiger that you always knew!”

By all means limit your intake of BPA. However, I think that other factors might be involved like: cholesterol, blood pressure, stress, drug side effects, etc.

Below are listed 6 principles that the EPA Administrator, Lisa P. Jackson, mentioned in a speech not long ago in San Francisco.

Principle #1: Chemicals Should Be Reviewed … on Sound Science.

Principle #2: Manufacturers Should Provide EPA with the Necessary Information… that New and Existing Chemicals are Safe.

Principle #3: Risk-Management Decisions Should Take into Account Sensitive Subpopulations.

Principle #4: Manufacturers and EPA Should Act in a Timely Manner.

Principle #5: Public Access to Information Should Be Strengthened.

Principle #6: EPA Should Be Given a Sustained Source of Funding.

Nothing too radical here. It’s interesting to note that she is trying to enlist the support of the American Chemistry Council to implement her reforms. They are part of the “BPA belongs in baby bottles” faction. It should be interesting to see what happens.

Have you ever seen a product that made you say “Why didn’t I think of that?”

It’s called Blood Energy Drink. It even comes in its very own IV bag! As you can see in the photo, the blood type is B positive. I wonder if O negative taste any different?

Anyway, does anybody see a potential problem here?

Yes, Bisphenol A. Not only does one find it in plastic food storage containers, water bottles, etc., but, also in medical equipment-IV bags in particular. This is according to a study by the National Academy of Science, as discussed in Dr. Joseph McNamara’s Blog.
It’s an interesting read.

Have you noticed any really fat babies in the mall lately? I have. Infact since 1980 obesity in infants under 6 months had risen 73 percent according to a study released by the Harvard School of Public Health.

Furthermore, Japanese scientists have discovered that bisphenol A (the building block of hard, polycarbonate plastic, including that in baby bottles) stimulated the proliferation of existing fat cells among other things

You connect the dots.

So, if you’re pregnant or have little ones crawling around, it might be a good idea to get rid of any plastic baby bottles, Teflon frying pans and plastic wrap laying around your kitchen.
