I know that I see much more than that just at the “End of the Year Soccer Parties” that I attend with my daugthers. A good way to start would be to bring along reusable containers, utensils and towels to work, restaurants and potlucks. You might get some strange looks, but who cares?

According to the EPA, Bisphenol-A (bpa) -”a reproductive, developmental and systemic toxicant” has shown up in cash register receipts! (I always thought that they smelled funny). According to the Environmental Working Group, the amount of BPA on some Bank ATM, McDonalds and Wal-Mart receipts is 250 to 1000 times more than what’s found in a can of food or baby formula, etc. Better think twice next time they ask if you want a receipt or not!

The federal government (Canadian, of course) declared bisphenol A a toxin today. This official declaration falls under the Canadian Enviromental Protection Act. Most of the big retailers (Sears Canada, Rexall Pharmacies and Hudson’s Bay Company just to name a few) have fallen in line and started to pull plastic products containing BPA off the shelves. Imagine if they did that at Walmart here in the states. (Yes, I shop at Walmart ). Half of the store would be empty!
If you want to start pulling items off your shelves, and replacing them with quality, non BPA food containers, water bottles and baby bottles, then check out www.HealthyKitchenware.com.

Interestingly enough, this subject is showing up in the “mainstream” press. According to an article in “U.S. News & World Report“, BPA might be a cause for erectile dysfunction in men. For those of you that don’t know, BPA is an essential ingredient of polycarbonates, epoxy resins and many types of plastics.

I can hear it now: “Sorry about that honey, I guess that microwaving my lunch in tupperware everyday at the office has really lowered my testosterone levels because of the BPA leaching into my food. I’d better start taking my lunch in glass or stainless steel containers. Then, things will be back to normal, kitten. I’ll be that tiger that you always knew!”

By all means limit your intake of BPA. However, I think that other factors might be involved like: cholesterol, blood pressure, stress, drug side effects, etc.

The more that I look into it, the more I see that “going green” isn’t that complicated. My parents practiced many of the principles and they never considered themselves “Green”. They even voted for Reagan! Things like checking the air pressure in your tires. If everyone in the US kept their tires at the recommended PSI , we could save an estimated 2 billion gallons of fuel every year.

Also, use wax paper or wraps instead of plastic baggies for sandwiches that you put in your reusable lunch containers.

Pretty simple really.

They have to have it somewhat balanced – fruit is mandatory. Caesar salads are a huge hit. So, are spinach wraps stuffed with cream cheese, cole slaw or left-over BBQ chicken.

My youngest prefers her 3 tier stainless steel container to carry her lunch, snacks, etc. Did you know that these were introduced by the British to India? It was the perfect solution for the lunchtime needs of Her Majesty’s Imperial Government office workers.
