I just read an interesting article in the health section of The Times of India about potential health risks of heating foods in polycarbonate plastic food containers. It seems as though they want to alert their readers to the potential risks of bisphenol A, BPA, which can leach out of the plastic at high temperatures. BPA has been linked to fertility problems, breast cancer and prostate cancer. I didn’t realize that plastic containers were widely used in India. I thought that this was more of a first world phenomena. Anyway, don’t heat anything in polycarbonate plastic food containers, especially ones that have the number 7 marked on the bottom.

Here are some interesting tips from the Frugal Traveler: On a road trip, always carry a metal water bottle that can be filled using drinking fountains at amusement parks, zoos, etc for free. Also, carry around one of those stainless steel refillable coffee mugs designed for the cup holder in your car. You can use it instead of those small foam cups that one always finds in hotel rooms.

What to do with those leftovers from restaurants? Don’t use the disposable plastic or foam cartons that the restaurant staff always hands out at the end of the meal. Pack them in glass containers. Afraid that the glass lid will come off? Do what I do and wrap a rubber band around the container, throw it in a padded carying case and take it back to the room for later use.

Is BPA, also called Bisephenol, really dangerous? As you have read in other blogs on this site, studies have shown that BPA can lead to all sorts of health problems, including erectile dysfunction in men, heart aliments and disrupting endocrines in your body. However, for every study showing the harmful effects of the chemical, there is a conflicting study demonstrating the opposite. How is this possible? Because different laboratories use their own procedures and experiments in studing the chemical, which lead to different results in their findings. I don’t claim to be a scientist. But, until they get it all sorted out, it would be best to error on the side of caution. Don’t microwave anything in a plastic containers. Use stainless steel and glass containers around the kitchen.

Good article in “The Star Online” about how the kitchen is a good place to start going green. Of course, don’t use Teflon frying pans. They wear out pretty fast. (I do miss flipping eggs in one, though). Use cast iron or stainless steel instead. My sister picked up a discarded cast iron skillet at a garage sale. It will last generations. Also, stainless steel and glass containers are essential items for your kitchen. They’re a bit more expensive, but you’ll have them forever.

I know. It’s a pain to recycle all of those plastic containers. But, you and your family will be glad that you did.

The federal government (Canadian, of course) declared bisphenol A a toxin today. This official declaration falls under the Canadian Enviromental Protection Act. Most of the big retailers (Sears Canada, Rexall Pharmacies and Hudson’s Bay Company just to name a few) have fallen in line and started to pull plastic products containing BPA off the shelves. Imagine if they did that at Walmart here in the states. (Yes, I shop at Walmart ). Half of the store would be empty!
If you want to start pulling items off your shelves, and replacing them with quality, non BPA food containers, water bottles and baby bottles, then check out www.HealthyKitchenware.com.

Interestingly enough, this subject is showing up in the “mainstream” press. According to an article in “U.S. News & World Report“, BPA might be a cause for erectile dysfunction in men. For those of you that don’t know, BPA is an essential ingredient of polycarbonates, epoxy resins and many types of plastics.

I can hear it now: “Sorry about that honey, I guess that microwaving my lunch in tupperware everyday at the office has really lowered my testosterone levels because of the BPA leaching into my food. I’d better start taking my lunch in glass or stainless steel containers. Then, things will be back to normal, kitten. I’ll be that tiger that you always knew!”

By all means limit your intake of BPA. However, I think that other factors might be involved like: cholesterol, blood pressure, stress, drug side effects, etc.

Below are listed 6 principles that the EPA Administrator, Lisa P. Jackson, mentioned in a speech not long ago in San Francisco.

Principle #1: Chemicals Should Be Reviewed … on Sound Science.

Principle #2: Manufacturers Should Provide EPA with the Necessary Information… that New and Existing Chemicals are Safe.

Principle #3: Risk-Management Decisions Should Take into Account Sensitive Subpopulations.

Principle #4: Manufacturers and EPA Should Act in a Timely Manner.

Principle #5: Public Access to Information Should Be Strengthened.

Principle #6: EPA Should Be Given a Sustained Source of Funding.

Nothing too radical here. It’s interesting to note that she is trying to enlist the support of the American Chemistry Council to implement her reforms. They are part of the “BPA belongs in baby bottles” faction. It should be interesting to see what happens.
