Eye opening information about BPA
An incredibly well researched article about Bisphenol A (BPA) from the Fast Company offers the following information:
1. Only five companies in the US produce BPA.
2. Those five companies make about 6 billion dollars a year from the compound.
3. “Of the more than 100 independently funded experiments on BPA, about 90% have found evidence of adverse health effects at levels similar to human exposure.”
4. “[E]every single industry-funded study ever conducted — 14 in all — has found no [adverse health] effects.”
5. “[A] rat strain called the CD Sprague-Dawley, which has been shown to be insensitive to synthetic estrogens like BPA” has been used in 13 of the 29 studies that have shown no harm due to BPA.
6. Scientists responsible for most studies are usually consultants working for the companies profiting from the compound.
7. “The United States has a long tradition of keeping harmful substances — lead, DDT, tobacco, PCBs — on the market for decades after scientists find adverse effects.”

[...] BPA that is. Coca Cola announced that they will not phase out bisphenol A, a known hormone disruptor, in their packaging of canned soft drinks. Apparently, there’s not enough scientific evidence to support it. That’s OK. I quite drinking the stuff after we did an experiment in school, where a tooth was placed in a jar full of coke and we watched it slowly disapear. BPA might be the least of your worries when drinking coke! [...]
