According to the “Clean Air Council”, the average American throws out 4.39 lbs of trash a day! I know that I see much more than that just at the “End of the Year Soccer Parties” that I attend with my daugthers. A good way to start would be to bring along reusable containers, utensils and towels to work, restaurants and potlucks. You might get some strange looks, but who cares?

First, you can quit buying those bulky, over-packaged, prefab lunches with names like: Lunch Makers and Lunchables. Whenever I’m in the supermarket with my youngest, she’s always attracted to them. Must be the packaging that catches her eye!
A better alternative for you, the environment and your kids would be to use wrap-n-mats for sandwiches, snacks, etc. They’re reusable, economical and washable. Also, check out the new, cool designs that will entice your kids to use them everyday!

Just before school starts, we now carry four new child friendly prints of wrap-n-mats. We have creatures (cuddly playful pals, desert ponies and polar friends), as well as machines (colorful helicopters and planes). These in addition to the prints we always carry that include blue, green, gingham and eco designs.
These re-usable sandwich wraps are made with poly-cotton prints on the outside and polypropylene in the inside. The wrap turns into a handy mat to set up your lunch or snack.
Reduce your use of plastic baggies with these useful sandwich wraps.

Good article in “The Star Online” about how the kitchen is a good place to start going green. Of course, don’t use Teflon frying pans. They wear out pretty fast. (I do miss flipping eggs in one, though). Use cast iron or stainless steel instead. My sister picked up a discarded cast iron skillet at a garage sale. It will last generations. Also, stainless steel and glass containers are essential items for your kitchen. They’re a bit more expensive, but you’ll have them forever.
I know. It’s a pain to recycle all of those plastic containers. But, you and your family will be glad that you did.

Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Chemical Company Limited (SSMC) (Shanghai, China), a joint venture established in 2006 by Mitsui Chemicals Inc. headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. headquartered in Beijing, China announced that it is building a plant for the production of acetone and phenol in Shanghai.
Now, why would these two companies spend millions of dollars to construct a chemical plant to produce Bisphenol A (BPA) when BPA is coming under increasing scrutiny in North America and Europe. The company already produces 120,000 metric tons (264,600,000 lbs) of the stuff a year. Something tells me to follow the money on this one! China just surpassed the US to become the world’s largest auto market. Will it become the world’s largest BPA market too!

Just when you thought it was safe by tossing out all of your plastic food storage containers, bottles, etc; and buying healthyKitchenware Products to replace them, guess again! According to the EPA, Bisphenol-A (bpa) -”a reproductive, developmental and systemic toxicant” has shown up in cash register receipts! (I always thought that they smelled funny). According to the Environmental Working Group, the amount of BPA on some Bank ATM, McDonalds and Wal-Mart receipts is 250 to 1000 times more than what’s found in a can of food or baby formula, etc. Better think twice next time they ask if you want a receipt or not!

The federal government (Canadian, of course) declared bisphenol A a toxin today. This official declaration falls under the Canadian Enviromental Protection Act. Most of the big retailers (Sears Canada, Rexall Pharmacies and Hudson’s Bay Company just to name a few) have fallen in line and started to pull plastic products containing BPA off the shelves. Imagine if they did that at Walmart here in the states. (Yes, I shop at Walmart ). Half of the store would be empty!
If you want to start pulling items off your shelves, and replacing them with quality, non BPA food containers, water bottles and baby bottles, then check out www.HealthyKitchenware.com.

BPA found in some plastic bottles, tin can lining, some receipts, etc.
So, after much consumer and media attention, BPA continues to be around and not even the Canadian government has put it on the toxic list. It’s been about two years…

Folate is found in lettuce too.
So, your mom was right, eat your greens!
As if we did not already know, greens are good for you, a new study has discovered that folate, which is found in dark green veggies and beans can counterattack the effects of BPA in our bodies.
That is great news, it is always handy to have a cure, when you know there is a problem. So, go eat some beans, lentils, spinach, collard greens, etc.
